How to Dock Your Boat
There are so many tasks you have to master when you become a boat owner. Whether it’s learning how to tie knots, navigate with a chart, or maintain your boat, you’ll find yourself presented with challenges that expand your knowledge over time.
One of the more difficult tasks to a new boater is often docking the boat without doing it damage. As your Maine boat dealer, New England Water Sports has the information you need to conquer the docks and tie up your boat safely.
Don’t Approach Too Quickly
A common maxim around docking your boat is that you don’t want to approach the dock any harder than you’re willing to hit it. Obviously, the whole goal is to not hit the dock at all, so you’ll want to slow your speed down considerably as you approach the marina or pier. Watch for other boats, PWC, or swimmers in your path so that you can safely navigate around them.
Check the Wind
It’s a good idea to determine how hard the wind is blowing and from what direction. If the wind is blowing off the coast or towards the water, you’ll have to fight against it to dock. If the wind is blowing towards shore, though, you’ll probably find that docking is easier, but you’ll need to be extra-careful about not hitting it.
Adjust Slowly
As you approach the dock, maintain a slow but steady speed and adjust the position of the boat with small and cautious movements. Remember that you can always back up and try again. It’s a good idea for someone else on the boat to get your dock lines ready so that you can securely tie your boat to the marina once you’ve got it in position.
