Cold-Weather Gear For Winter Boating
Winters here in Maine are known for their cold temperatures and heavy precipitation. However, inclement weather doesn’t deter the most adventurous boaters, who still want to get out on the water to go hunting, fishing, or boating with friends and a thermos full of hot coffee. In order to keep yourself warm on the water, you need to gear up, so try getting these pieces of cold-weather gear to stay cozy on your boat this winter.
Layers and Layers
While you may just want to wear one layer of street clothes, it’s actually better to layer up your clothes for the cold. Putting on some long-johns or thermal underwear underneath your jeans and sweater will keep heat close to your body so you don’t get cold. Thick wool socks and gloves under fingerless mittens can insulate your extremities.
Flotation Coat
Upgrade your standard lifejacket for a whole flotation coat, which will keep you afloat and warm if you happen to fall into the water. These coats are very well-insulated so you’ll benefit from them on your boat, too, and they help you to stay safe.
Dry Suit
If you’re looking to keep yourself dry while boating in rough waters, a dry suit is insulating and designed to block out water. As you well know, getting wet in the cold makes you much colder and more susceptible to the damaging effects of below-freezing temperatures, including hypothermia and frostbite.
