Using your wakeboard boat for watersports like wakeboarding and water skiing is a great way to spend a summer afternoon. However, you likely know that the water can still be quite cold, even on the hottest days, which can send a real shock to your system if you fall off your wakeboard. This is why watersports participants tend to wear either a wetsuit or a drysuit while they perform their sport. Here’s how you can choose the right option for your needs.

Wetsuits

True to its name, a wetsuit does not keep your body dry when you enter the water. Instead, the wetsuit traps a layer of water between your skin and the fabric of the suit, then warms it up using the neoprene insulation it contains. It’s necessary to wear a swimsuit underneath the wetsuit.

Wetsuits fit tightly against your skin in order to keep you well-insulated against the cold. They do take some time to put on, but they’re very convenient. Milder weather conditions are best for wetsuits, as they can’t insulate you against extremely cold temperatures.

Drysuits

If you need to stay dry during your time in the water, a drysuit is what you need. These suits also contain neoprene insulation, but their exterior is made of tough treated rubber that is similar to that of car tires. These suits allow you to wear practically anything underneath them, since they don’t fit as closely, but this also means they’re bulkier and heavier.

Which Suit Should You Choose?

Concerned about your agility? Wetsuits are sleeker and easier to move in compared to drysuits. If you’re worried about durability, a drysuit is the better option, as these suits can last up to twenty years, compared to the average lifespan of five years for a wetsuit. Colder weather also makes a drysuit the best option. On a budget? Wetsuits tend to be cheaper than drysuits. For either option, you’ll need assistance in getting the suit on.
